Safety image.

I can’t express in words how much I hate benefits elections. I seriously dread it every single year. Suprise jackass, everything is more expensive than last year! Why? No particular reason.

THEN there’s the plans themselves. Do I want an HRA, an HSA, an EPO or a PPO? What does that even mean? No worries here’s a massively complicated chart, good luck with that.

Oh you’ve got a family? HAHAHAHA. That’ll be a billion dollars plz.

Having dealt with both, Canadian system is one million times better. Plus it gives employees way more options. If your boss or company sucks/is stupid, you can go start your own firm or find another job, even if you have a family member who is sick. No worries about health care or losing coverage, or not being able to provide employees with decent coverage.

Ah. I figured it might have something to do with another interpretation of PTO

Cashing in vacation hours is an option for you? We either use it or lose it. Toward the end of the year when most people with kids use it (Thanksgiving/Christmas), they start giving us a hard time about Time-On-Job (TOJ) metrics being too low and “can you just work some extra hours so we can meet our annual goals?”

I can only carry over what I earn in a year. My dad on the other hand worked for the USPS for over 5 years. He was grandfathered in to where his time off would all carry over and when he retired could cash it out a the current pay rate. He ended up getting a check for almost $20k.. I think I might tell my future kids to get a government job and stick with it.

Plus it’s a lot cheaper. Look at the bars for Canada and the U.S. The U.S. already spends as much (slightly more, if you look close) for the public (i.e. government-paid) fraction plus four times as much for the private fraction.

In other words, if we could magically adopt the Canadian system overnight, we actually wouldn’t be paying one cent more in taxes, we’d get 100% coverage, and your company’s HR department’s health care bill would drop by three quarters.

You can’t roll it over into next year?

Would you like to be financially ruined in the aftermath of a serious accident, or would you like to be financially ruined every month for the duration of your employment here?

My experience with the Canadian medical system is hardly good. My grandpa had to wait over a year for heart surgery. The wait alone took years off his life and as a result he is no longer with us.

Sorry to hear about your grandpa. The Canadian system is definitely not perfect in terms of waits.   That being said I’ve never seen denials like down here and never had to fight getting dropped because an employee had a premature kid.   There are no bills/co-pays, so no one struggles with medical debt, and you don’t have struggling with a major illness or those who have lost a loved one dealing with bills.  Could it be better? Most definitely. But I think both the American and Canadian systems will get better once the U.S. goes single payer. Medicare, Tricare and Medicaid already cover more than a 1/3 of the U.S. population, and I think you would be hard pressed to find someone on Medicare or Tricare that would prefer a private plan (those with Medicaid probably would though, it’s not easy to find people who accept it). Medicare just needs to expand to everyone, if not there needs to be a buy-in option for the uninsured.

We used to be allowed to roll over whatever we didn’t use. They had a bunch of layoffs where they paid out vacation that people had accrued for years, so they decided to cap it at 250 hours. After that, people would just take the payout of the extra vacation hours in January. That was screwing up their January budgets, so it became a use it or lose it policy.
